I don't think I'd like to make a case considering what "evidence" they'll have to show for what they based their decision on. I won't be making the same mistake again, that's for sure. That is the sad truth, I guess. All three of us were agency and easily replaceable, that's what made this whole situation a lot easier for them.
Are companies supposed to tell people what they can do and can't do when working on computers? Are companies supposed to block websites that are not NSFW?
Damn they should have let you go with a warning, not firing you. Some people when they get some power get to act like asses and pretend their employees to work and act like robots. No sweat, no mistakes. It's not fair and speaks quite badly about their qualities as human beings. It was just Reddit, not Rotten (NSFW, you have been warned).
Same at my company. Its pretty common for companies to have a policy that restricts the use of internet for anything but work related matters. I have access to anything and everything on my machine at work and have probably stumbled on a few "questionable" things myself. After hearing this story, I will be a bit more careful now! I think most companies would warn you if they caught you using the internet frequently on company time, but not many have tolerance for NSFW stuff like hot butt sex.
Sorry hear mate, losing your job sucks. Me and my fellow work mates all got made redundant last week, city council cancelled our contract because they found another company that can do the same job for less... like minimum wage less and for the job we do, no one should be getting paid minimum wage for it.
If I had a company, I just wouldn't allow internet and put all blocks in place at the IDS/IPS/Firewall level. If staff want to use the internet at work, they could work somewhere else and get it. Internet usage is not a right.
There's many jobs that deserve more than minimum wage, even more so considering the level of production they output. Most companies have people by the balls however, and they know it. I was on my break. :/ Yeah, would have been wiser to use my phone. ^^
Yo doug, was your boss a Man Utd fan? Anyway, I'm sorry to hear about your loss, hope you guys find something soon. I'm currently job hunting too, had one interview today, another one tomorrow, things are picking up.
You can do that but it can restrict other people who may need access. You can block individual IP's and ports or protocols using Access List control but they can be a nightmare when setting up and giving everyone access to what they need and what they dont need without something going wrong. Our company has just bought in a 3 strikes and your out rule if your caught using the internet mainly for pirated software download. Im not sure if porn is included in a 3 strikes or wether its 1 strike and your out. Ill find out tomorrow as im curious about it now. I only place i go on the Internet while at work if i get the time is Guru3D or personal email account.
In our contract it says we are allowed to use the internet for personal use as long as you don't exaggerate (work goes first ofc) and don't use it for piracy or porn. Imo, the best way to restrict access is by using a proxy server.
Haha, he was Polish so probably! Bit annoying really and I'm being told to appeal it, although it happened during probation period so I doubt I have any chance. Very long story short I got this job in supermarket in April and since then I have had a few days off due to various problems in my life which make me extremely weak some days..(wont go into life story) I went to the docs and got medication to solve the problem, the meds made me sick for the first few days so I asked for an emergency few days off as holiday, manager obliged and even gave the whole week. 4 days into the holiday time my regional manager phones and tells me not to bother coming back... Oh well, easy come easy go in that type of role I guess.
