The biggest thing for me is that they will finally upgrade the PCIe lines. The top end variant will have 20 lanes from the southbridge in addition to what the CPU provides, and the path between CPU and southbridge will have it's bandwidth doubled. Sorely needed now that nearly all cards are PCIe and now that SSDs will need lanes too. Skylake might finally be worth uprading from Sandy.

Indeed ..........since 3 years 2600k is really doing well ,my main concern with pc is the heat , since I live in the hottest place in the world .... Ivy + haswell are really hot .....
but DDR4 + 6 cores that's something want to upgrade to.........I hope the new cpu are not hot

This has 8 core extreme CPU(s) doesn't it? Skylake I mean.

I'm just going to drop a Broadwell onto this board when they arrive.

And me Cannon Lake & DDR4 with Z18x chipset.

Or better yet true 8core Skylake-E & X170? chipset, yeah this will be better.

I can't justify spending that much money on something I wont take full advantage of.

I mainly game/watch movies in my spare time.

I gave a huge thought on X99 even, but decided dropping Broadwell onto the Z97 was a better idea.

Dunno I can't really see to get me another 4 core in next 2-3 years time..

Was gonna get a true 8 core (for current build), but now that I saw its only X variants for 1000€, no tnx..
Atm really happy with this 4770k, already 1year old and still pretty much owning in everything, especially if OC'ed, like you see yourself now:)
-btw what voltage do you need @ 4.8ghz?

And when Skylake-E appears there will be mainstream 8 cores for sure and some nice DDR4 32gb or something :nerd:

Edit: although will see how this Broadwell fiasco turns out, I still think Z87 will need another firmware IME update just like now for DevilsCanyon.

It was this intel PC manager Kirk Skaugen who said back in September 12th 2013 @ IDF conference.

Then I might snag one Broadwell DT too, otherwise Im set to wait for Skylake-E lga2011.

the density on the DDR4 chips is going to be roughly double that of DDR3, so you'll be looking at 2 stick 32GB kits :)

Might be waiting for this over X99 (depending on X99 performance although I'm guessing it's not going to be a lot faster than IB-E).

    Skylake is looking very impressive.

I agree, i think the uprades on Broadwell and skylake none E will not be worth it, specially for someone with Haswell chips, i also plan on moving toward an E platform, but i feel its not the right time, with sata express still setting down, PCIe 4.0 coming in a year or two, DDR4 having better yields and coming down in price.... i feel skylake E will be good bet into a worthy uprade.

I guess that would depend on whether you buy the 8 core or not?

I'm going to wait for X99 before I do anything platform wise.

Well 4.8 is quite high for that CPU even on water it's going to get hot. Is it de-lidded perhaps?
