There is a Rumor going around all over the net and many web-sites that Valve has silently released their Valve Source Engine 2.0 already. I'm really looking forward to this , I hope is true . Well Dota 2 technically isn't on source 2 yet only the tools are but you can compile and build out the map and stuff. It looks the same as all the assets are the same but it's running in DX11 and 64 bit.
After the continued success of Titanfall, I'm sure they are probably thinking "We don't need to develop jackdidderlysquat".
I hope they do switch over to Source 2. For DOTA 2 the map loading times was instant and the fps is supposedly better.
After watching that and taking an internal leap, I think Source2 appears to be nothing more than usage of DX11 and 64bit, coupled to a new content creation system. In other words, I do not think it is a brand spanking new engine. It is probably no different than Frosbite3 from Frostbite2 or Cryengine3 from Cryengine2, or even dare I say it; UE4 from UE3. It is not Snowdrop.
Yea.... i'm pretty sure at this point the idea of a third episode has been dropped. Especially considering the fact that if we eventually see an Episode 3, 7 years after Episode 2 was released... i'm pretty sure people would be equally pissed. Not to mention if you watch the video rflair linked, he goes through a whole bunch of stuff, and comes across reference to HL3.
If they confirm L4D3 and HL3, or even just L4D2 on source2 i´m gonna like buy a bottle and some shrimps and celebrate. I´m dead ****ing serious.
I know, right? Would be awesome to know that Valve is still doing.... well.... ANYTHING at this point, besides milking the popularity of Steam as a digital distribution platform.
I mean they are doing a lot obviously. They have the steambox/steam controller. They are making huge changes for streaming game thing they are doing. They are constantly updating CSGO/Dota 2 + just had the international. They are clearly working on Source 2 behind the scenes. They already said they've ported L4D2 + other games to Source 2 internally along with that leak confirming that L4D3 is in the works. Source 2 itself is a pretty huge update. You don't need to have a complete rewrite to significantly improve an engine. They don't announce things because the people working on projects internally can switch to whatever they want whenever they want. They don't have a rigid development structure. They don't have set schedules for releases in terms of a company guideline. They kinda just go to work and work on what they want.
