I bought a Nexus 7 for my mum and she absolutely loves the thing, I actually have to yank it away from her just so we can talk lol.

It's impossible not like it. It is the only tablet that really makes sense.

Question. Is it a good idea to use an anti-virus? Avast has an android version. What happens when you get infected?

@ crap daddy - I use avast on my Samsung Galaxy S3 and apart from seeing a scanning message in the notification bar it works flawlessly and with the minimum of intrusion. It's also free. I'm not 100% convinced that Android devices need anti-virus software myself but I guess it is better to be safe than sorry. I would definitely recommend avast from personal experience.

    Merry Christmas to all! :D

i wonder how many Android Apps actually utilize the Nexus 10's high resolution, kinda pointless if not many do. Most apps on Ipad have already updated to higher res.

Ill be using bitdefender although its not really need tbh.
Do regular backups of Nexus files on Desktop PC, If Nexus gets infected reset to Factory Standard and reinstall backup, easy peasy:)

Android properly scales it off the bat, it even scales designs built for phones on tablet without actually stretching it.

scales, but their not actually made for that resolution though right?
i take it that's like my PS3 scaling a 640x res game to 1080p lol

when I mean scale, it's not stretch, it just redraws the assets properly, there's no pixelation like you'll see when stretching an iPhone app on an iPad.

For example, Twitter (like Facebook) is an app that was designed for smartphones and does not have a tablet interface. You can see that there's no pixelization or anything that you'll see if you were to stretch it. Due to Android's resolution independence rendering system, it just re-renders all your assets properly without stretching the assets to fit your screen.

EDIT: It's not like the scaling found on consoles, they stretch the image.

I got a nexus 7 today at a very cheap price.

Anyway, but I'm disappointed with touch sense performance. If think rooting and anew rom will fix it. But which rom to use? Those xda or what ever they are, guys, have a lot of custom roms on their website. I want a rom which won't change the vanilla look. I just need better touch performance. Chrome works like sht. Such an insult to customer.

Anyway, any ideas which one to use please? Thank you.

I have a friend who is using SmoothROM v5.1 on his Nexus 7, i never got to use it with the original OS, but this rom seems fast and stable when i have used it.

I'm considering picking up a Nexus10 for the GF in July, on paper it looks awesome but as per above the worry is the scaling to such a high res as surely that could make for some issues, especially with font size.
Quality wise stretching might be bad, but i'm not sure how good this would be either.

The Amazon Kindle app and Google Play Book app have built-in dictionaries.

Turning off background sync for all accounts is a good idea, when you don't need it. The Nexus 7's weak spots are I/O and RAM amount. Both of which will be impacted in this case. Babying the tablet in those areas will net you the most performance.

My mother has a Nexus 7 and I had the chance to use it extensively when I was setting it up for her.

I wasn't exactly blown away by it to be honest (she loves it however) as I already have a Samsung Galaxy S3 and this only seemed to be a slightly bigger version of that with a significantly poorer screen IMO which lacks vibrancy (the colours are oddly muted) and text looks less crisp than it does on a 5" screen. Performance seems OK but the lack of support for memory cards is what put me off buying one in the first place. 32 GB is not enough once you start downloading the larger games and then find you have to start deleting music and videos to make space. For the price though, it is a fine but unexceptional tablet.
