not a good upgrade for ppl with 7970 or even 7950 imo but good for anything below that i guess. even tho 580 does hold up still nicely. Still good card tho ^^ and great review
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5699/nvidia-geforce-gtx-680-review/18 I find this interesting. On this page, the 7970 scores higher in every theoretical bench against the 680, and yet, when you bring it all together, the 7970 is a bit slower.
After reading like 4 reviews on the net ; Id say HD7970 defends pretty well vs GTX680 , it beats it in Crysis Warhead, Metro 2033, AvP. At multi monitor resolutions they come close as 1-2% from each other ... We should also consider GTX680 is running higher clocks and has lower OC potential. I would love to see them using same clocks ( that kinda hard with nvidias dynamic OC). The prices on HD7970 is of course bad right now and GTX680 is no brainer with current prices , which will no doubt change soon . But looking just GPU vs GPU (architecture vs archtecture ) they come very CLOSE.
Why is this a mid-range card with the 680 name? GPU prices are so screwed up this time around for both makers. AMD better reduce the cost of their 7970 quite a bit in order to sell any more of them. Hell, some 580s are less than $400 now.
Oh, it's an epic card. 10% better than 7970 and it very good. I remember 7970 review and I can't understand why now these 10% are epic? P.S. In some games, 7970 beats 680, but anyway it's epic!
You make a very good point with this. The test to do would be clock a 7970 to the same level as Nvidias max turbo frequency and run the tests that way. The 7970 also has better power delivery and theoretical more OC headroom (300W vs 225W), and none of that stupid stacked power connectors. Overclocking should be a bit easier as well as you have none of that turbo stuff to worry about. I have no regrets getting my pair of 7970s.
i kinda read 7950 oc guide compared that 1150 to 680 for the sake of it as i know it goes to around 1150 in games like bf3 they come to a stand off 1125 oc on 7970 guide comes to similar conclusion and trades blows. and then i see "where the hell are the 79xx drivers that boost performance on anything theres none to be seen" everything is the goddamn same as in the beginning.
Hardware heaven has a good review of the 680 stock vs 7970 Lighting @ 1265/1505 680 still stomps it here techpowerup have also shown that both overclocked the 680 wins easily here
If anyone find review with HD7970 vs GTX680 with SAME( or close ) clocks , i would be very interested.
full power i told ya...amd goodbye... and these are early drivers on gtx680...... kepler has so much potential...it's really next gen... mid-range is 10-15% faster than competitor's high-end...... even the oc'ed 7990 will not win gtx780(gk110)...have this on mind...
Whilst it's hard to guess at what might happen over the next few months, is it not at least possible that Nvidia could *initially* push the GK110 into Quadro cards which are more compute focused and command higher prices/margins? I was slightly stumped by the fact that the GTX580 3GB and Quadro cards had so very little to differentiate them (including support in apps like CS5.5 ) other than the fact Mac owners had to pay over the odds as per  If I was Nvidia, that is definitely what I would be doing. Let's face it, there'll still be the people who want the absolute best performance in games, price be damned, who will end up getting the Quadro regardless. Sadly, I am one of them. I'm essentially condoning this, aren't I? :wanker: CDJay
I'm not sure why everybody is so bothered about this being a mid-range card at $500. Comparing it to the GTX580, it gives a reasonable performance jump, just as the GTX580 had over the GTX480. I still believe this is high end, I mean for that amount of money. Cards like the GTX590 or GTX685 (or whatever) should be considered as enthusiast
huh? when both cards are overclocked they perform almost the same (some tests gtx680 comes out on top and some tests the 7970 comes out on top). the driver point is good though.
if it's mid end price it like a damn mid end. now it's high end and end of discussion i still think this is high end in keeping gaming in mind. gk110 will be high end all around card (computing so on) and eat 1000 watts.
the driver point can be used on amd too since nothing has changed since "beta" when first tests came so
+1 Totally agree with you said, including the review. Especially, since I purchased one of my 580's for $400 new, and the other $425 used for 6 months. Until either company comes out with a single card that can out do my cards at least 30 FPS for the games I play, their new offerings can sit on the shelf. Hoping the the other card that might come out at the end of the year by Nvidia with be the one.
mid-range i insist...high-end kepler is gk110...there are other reasons...for....... "kepler's refresh" may never see the production line because of amd weakness... you can't imagine...my source told me, that scheduled kepler's refresh would be faster than gtx 580 tri-sli and almost equal to 590 sli...:bang::bang::bang:
