I'm just wondering at what point we're going to come to a limit in miniaturization (10 nm?) where we'll potentially see CPU manufacturers starting to go into the third dimension.

    CPU cubes FTW! :D

It's supposedly ~11nm. But yeah, they're going to have to do something at that point. Either a whole new technology or going 3D could work. In which case IBM is already on top of the technology.

Eventually we'll be forced to use completelly different type of chips once we hit levels where you just can't make it smaller for usage in home environment.
You can go on atomic level, but certanly not for home conditions.

Quantum computing is what is next, or possibly trinary computers.

Intel recently have made a breakthrough by using a high-k material which is lnown as hafnium to replace the transistor's silicon dioxide gate dielectric, and they have been using new metals in order to replace the N and PMOS polysilicon gate electrodes.

The thread. It's three years old. Some of these people don't even post anymore.

    Forums arent that hard.
