oww crap, i enabled it and since then windows was randomly freezing, i dont have settings in bios for that but i guess its permanently enabled and together with this registry parameter its a mess for system, ohh well.

Don't see the option in my bios as well. Running that tool shows 4.09MHz and my dpc latency hovers around 102-138 depending on what I'm doing on the pc.

I seem to get lower latency with HPET off in bios. On I get around 100. Off I get around 65-75. But it does spike up more.

There was me thinking all this time it was already working just cause i had it enabled in the bios profile for my HTPC partition.
To test i have Enabled it on both my HTPC and gaming partitions.

Will see how things go, but will leave it enabled on both unless i get any issues.

Make sure when you test it that you are running something. 1 or 2 games maybe.

And do not use DPC Latency Checker from http://www.thesycon.de
It's old and outdated, use a proper dpc latency monitor.

Do you perhaps have one to recommend for windows 8 ? (besides xperf)

    http://www.resplendence.com/latencymon supports windows 8

ok so i tested it in 2 games. shatter which is a shoot em up game and faster than light which is like a rogue like strategy game. these games are not hardware intensive so i will have to retest in a game like diaspora which is a freespace 2 mod.

    im still doing more tests.

Thanks! But are you sure it supports windows 8 ?

    "for Windows 7/Vista/2008 (x86 and x64)"

    Do i need a beta version ?

MSI P67 GD65 (with an up to date BIOS because it is vital in order to fully support my RAM).

And yeah I've tried all those tools. I don't have any performance issues with HPET on or off to start with so I just tried this tweak out of sheer curiosity. I'm just going to stick to HPET off in the bios and no special Windows settings because it gives me by far the lowest DPC latency and has no noticeable side effects.

    got an asus p5q here..
just tested this out of curiosity..
it seems like my mobo does have it, but its not shown in my bios. anyway..with the wintimertester it showed me the rate of 3.7 something, so HPET was off in windows. (but forced in bios???)

so i put in the command for it to enable it and restarted..
And now it shows teh 14. something mhz..so its enabled now..

DPC latency is teh same though..and there are no noticeable improvements or disimprovements right now..

just surfing, playing back media and desktop stuff...

    didnt try gaming yet..

My ratio on that test tool is on both, with or without HPET at stable 1.000 after 70 sek..before it jumps +- 0.00006

im gonna leave it on fo rnow and see what happens..

I missed around the the HPET tweaks mentioned in this thread a lot over the past few days on my relatively old (but well performing) system and found the way they were by default to be the best. That is HPET 64 bit enabled in the bios and nothing changed to Win 7 settings. Using the edit to force Win 7 to use the system timer maybe increased the smoothness of gameplay in low fps situations in Aion BUT it also seemed to take some performance off the top end.

So... random freezing, audio crackling and less FPS?
NOT snake oil after all :wanker:

    ps
nothing to report on my sys, everything same as before other than ratio being more stable without HPET in Win

It might help you to read other experiences on the web.
It can help some people, so its not snake oil, its an option for people to try.
If you dont fancy trying it, then bug another thread.
