I work in Detroit everyday. They usually only show you the family friendly neighborhoods.

Good movie to watch that show some truth about the city is BURN. Some of the stuff you see in the movie will shock you, to think their could be places like this in America. Filmed over the coarse of a year, its a documentary that follows the Detroit fire department around and shows the actual state of the city and how some residents treat it.

1.3 people a day get murdered in Detroit, some streets the police will not even go down. They keep the city up the best they can, the rest looks like a third world country.

I heard that only 40% of the street lights work in Detroit.

They also sold the Pontiac Silverdome for $600,000. Finally, stadiums are coming down to reasonable price levels.

I remember reading about the Silverdome being sold for pennies. it cost almost $60 million to build and ended up selling for just about 1% of that cost lol. That's nuts

60% work, 40% don't. An amusing figure, although most that don't work are in and around abandoned neighborhoods and districts. A scarier stat is that it takes police an average of 58 minutes to respond to a call, if its an area they'll even go into. Crime is pretty close to legal in the surrounding areas of downtown.

Detroit is actually very similar to an old timey prospector town, like the ones that were all over the southwest, just on a larger scale. Take away the jobs = town death. It's just more dramatic because of all the people stuck there.

The story of Detroit is the story of the decline of the auto industry, same with the other cities in "the rust belt". Detroit has to build itself out of the ashes, politicians from both parties are responsible.

Don't you worry about California we'll be fine, were ready to support all the states that can't pay there way, as usual...

meanwhile we'll be over 10 percent of the country getting 2 percent in the Senate, talk about taxation without representation.

Yes everyone was caught in the recession, extreme politics works both ways, but we'll be fine, we cut tons of money in a democratic controlled Senate and assembly. Revenues are up, employment is coming back, we Will Be Fine.

You'll be fine until a major earthquake destroys either Los Angeles or San Francisco (or both). The chances of one of the two are astronomically high in the next few decades.

We'll rebuild. We've done it before, time and time again.

Be it earthquake or fire or fire by earthquake
