There may well be incompatibility issues with a few applications and games but overall I think you will find that Windows 8.1 Update 1 is far more stable and bug-free than Windows 8 as it has received numerous fixes via Windows Update since it launched and continues to do so on a monthly basis (the so-called "Patch Tuesday" on the second Tuesday of each month). I certainly would not recommend anyone stick with Windows 8 now; Windows 8.1 Update 1 is the way to go.

I agree that 8.1 update 1 is better than the original 8.

The update policy from Microsoft is that 8.1 users have to install the update 1 before they can get any further updates. For the original Windows 8, you have until 2016 before you will be required to move to 8.1 and it's succeeding updates.

In my humble opinion, if you have Win8, there is absolutely no reason not to get the free 8.1 upgrade and it's update 1.

Always go with the latest updates/versions if it doesn't cost you a penny. Windows 8.1 Update 1 is solid. And rumors has it that we should be getting Update 2 (now called the August Update) on next patch Tuesday, on August 12.

win 8.1 with aero and no microsoft bloat like metro is my dream.

without aero, win 8 looks like win 95 :wanker:

It breaks SweetFX. This is unforigveable :) There's not a single game now I don't play without SweetFX.

8.1 also has a known memory leak, eventually causing out of memory errors, with games if resolution is different from the desktop resolution (say, you're downsampling, or using Steam streaming to a device with a different res) that's still unresolved. Makes you wonder what else is broken in 8.1.

Hence I'm still using 8 at the moment.

Do you have a source for this known memory leak?

    I haven't encountered a game or app that isn't compatible with Windows 8, apart from D3DOverrider. :(

Yeah the memory leak has been a widely known issue with 8.1 since release. I also have my reasons for sticking with 8 and not updating to 8.1, e.g. WDDM 1.3 incompatible vBIOS.

As someone already mentioned, Win 8 still receives updates. It's 8.1 that doesn't get any more updates if you don't install "update 1". That's all.

As long as SweetFX (or something like it) doesn't work well with 8.1, I'll happily stick to 8.

Same for me. I wouldn't touch win 7 again if i don't have to.

You can get the aero glass, disable the start menu, and get a software that get back the classic start menu if you want.
But I think they might bring the start menu back for Update 2, or Windows 9.

For the leak, it sound like worst.
So it will leak when it is not desktop resolution, including resolution that is lower like 800x600 etc.

8.1 even though I myself saw no substantial differences, but there is no reason for 8 users to not have 8.1 installed.

LOL did you even read this thread? I think my GPU not working due to an incompatible vBIOS is a very good reason not to have 8.1 installed.

    Yes?

And I gave the reason for why I voted what I did.

You are not me, I can vote for what I feel is right. Do you see all the other people that voted for 8.1 too?

Your hardware is not ours. Calling me out and flaming me for no reason...grow up dude.

    Windows 8.1 - 51 votes
    Windows 8 - 8 votes

So why don't you go complain to the other 50 people who voted 8.1 and let me alone.
