think the 480s gives pretty nice fps in most games and not worth getting the third card ..
its like 6degrees+ and what gives 5% more fps bleh

didnt know that 260 216 is hotter then 5970 in temp stress damn my card is hot

Nice review , hope you guys do one with watercooling and see what it does on the energy consumption . No more the high voltage fan on that Fermi.

Keep up the good work !!

3-Way SLi is massively bottlenecked by CPU. Really want a 980X at 4+GHz to see what it can do...
Also don't forget that drivers still have space to mature, particularly for 3-way and 4-way sli

3x was DYING for a better performing processor.

    Nice REview HH

Damn, ridiculous power consumption for a ridiculous performance. If you run 3-way sli with say a 1200w psu I wonder how far can you oc an I7 before you reach the limits of the psu.

Great review H, cant wait for the watercooling review!! Hope to see that 6 core chip at 4Ghz too ;)

Please re-run the tests with a Core i7-980XE and see if that CPU bottleneck is still there, Hilbert.

    They probably will be dude...
it's not an issue of cores, it's just that anything but 2560x1600 just doesn't stress the cards 100%

Did you even read the review, or did you just look at all the pretty pictures?
Hilbert himself said that the reason 3xSLI isn't scaling to the extent that 2xSLi is is becasue of the CPU bottleneck. He said this multipe times. On multiple pages. If you've got a better explanation for the scaling issue, we'd all love to hear it. :3eyes:

Okay smartass, find me a game that uses six cores

He's right though. It doesn't matter how many cores you add to the processor, if the game doesn't support more than 4 it wont matter. The only thing that can be done to help the bottleneck is overclock the piss out of the processor he used. Even then it'll still bottleneck like he already mentioned unless at 2560x1600.

    Kilowatt. Holy crap.

59 dB, even measured at a distance. Holy crap again.

Though I guess if you just spent 1700 dollars on video cards, you can probably afford some WCing with it.

nice review! although im still in the dark about how these cards of this generation work at 120hz, in single card or SLI/Xfire configurations...and with BluRay 3D right around the corner...

    Uhmmmmm
None of you found it really weird that in farcry 2 at the highest resolution, the 3x SLI was running MORE than 3x the performance of a single vid card??

Hey .. good catch, let me check it out ... looks like a typo in the chart.

Update: theres an error for the 3-Way SLI result in this particular chart -- we'll replace and update this chart as soon as possible.
    Update 2: Fixed !

Lol, it really shows how poor ATI's crossfire scaling really is. They should get around to fixing it at some point.

In the guru3d review itself it says the game with the 5870 is bottlenecked by the 5870 because the CPU's can do more, so when it compares itself to the 980X, it does the same performance and etc.

I'd like to see what the tri-SLI would do with a Phenom II X6 or 6-core Intel processor

Hilbert: What´s the name of that tech station on the testbed image? Looks really nice. Thanks for the article.
