    Hi,

Good argument re auto downclocking of speeds when idle. This was the first generation of CPU's which could handle an overclock and auto-down-clocking without any real problems.

I had a thought this morning as I've been pushing my CPU hard in the last month or so, maybe I should profile my overclock and only use it when a certain game/benchmark requires it. So for example my CPU runs 4.5GHz @ 1.25v which is relatively low, however it's now running at 4.8GHz @ 1.36v which is a considerable bump in voltage (temps went up 2-3 degrees which isn't bad). So as I begin to push the boundaries and reach 5.0GHz then maybe I should have my default profile as 4.5GHz and only use 4.8-5GHz for a game that desperately needs it.

That voltage is low. Did you try pushing higher clocks becouse it seems you can.

I did when I first got the cpu. I couldn't even get 4.6 with 1.3v so I decided to stay at 4.5ghz at 1.2v. Ended up being a smart choice I guess, the cpu is still going strong.

Ahhh, here she is after some 5.5 hours of Prime95 5.5 years ago :) http://forums.guru3d.com/showpost.php?p=4121991&postcount=6

I've been running this chip since I got it 24/7 on the bios auto overclock, which is around 4.5ghz.
Will double check when I'm home.

I had it up to 4.9 manually to run some benchmarks, but saw no day to day benefit of it being that high.

As mentioned, the CPU spends a lot of time at around a third of that speed.

1.3v still isnt the worst thing. You also have a decent board. I've been using 1.4v/4.8ghz for 4 years and its still going strong.

Seeing your 980ti could use the extra processing power so trying going higher once again might not be a bad idea. ;)

The only reason to go higher and push the oc to it's limit is to make the cpu blow up. That would force my hand in upgrading the cpu/board/ram :)

May 2011 at 4,5Ghz@1.3v upto this day.
I put my system to rest though, when I go to sleep.

Also, while 4.8Ghz doesn't bring much extra besides heat, I used to run it for tests at 1.39v, but nowadays need 1.4v at the minimum for that.
I suppose that's some kind of degradation. Motherboard is over 3 years old, broke the bios of the p8p67 and decided it was quicker and less hassle to buy a new one.

Yeah, these sandy chips seem to have a threshold, where you can reach a certain speed with low voltage, but going 100Mhz further requiring alot more. Mine behaves upto 4.6Ghz, after that it becomes irratic and wants much more juice.

Used my E8400@4ghz (can't remember the exact vcore, I think it was around 1.42V) for 7 years, changed it to get something better but it was still working flawlessly, so I guess it still is the case.

Loved those C2D so much <3

i7 930, bought at the tail end of 2010. Overclocked it day one to 4.2ghz. Has not degraded or needed more voltage.
I JUST replaced it with a x5670 off ebay used. Its likely 5 years old, not likely overclocked in what ever server it came out of. But is happy as can be at 4.4ghz in my rig.

That i7-2600k is a freaking champ. I've been running it at 4.2 for 5+ years. I keep thinking, maybe it's time to upgrade... but I think I can squeeze some more value from it. It still does fine with my 4k gaming set up.

my q9550 in my plex server is running 24/7/365 @3.4. It even transcode 4k movies.. It is from 2008 and have run at same speed since i bought it.
My old 2500k i sold to a friend a few years ago. Still runs the same clock i selected when i bought it in 2011, 4.5.
Both those cpu's was great, the 4790k i have now is garbage. Get unstable at 4.7 no matter the vcore. Running it now @4.6 1.28 and it is mostly stable.
(It will have to do until x299 or if it dies it will be replaced by a ryzen.)

    q6600 SLACR still running 3.4Ghz @ 1.4v since 2008

my bro has it and it runs 24/7 with no issues at all, still same gigabyte p35 mobo too

Still got my Q9650 running at 4Ghz with 1.36V 24/7. Brilliant CPU, been overclocked since new in 2008, first to 3.6GHz then 4.0Ghz in 2012.

My 4690k however has started to degrade. Was fine at 4.5Ghz 1.25V for about 2.5 years but recently I've had to tone it down to 4.3Ghz to keep it stable.
Really surprised by this especially as my voltage was so low.

Sure it's the CPU fault, maybe VRM section on that mobo has degraded? Some few weeks ago friend of mine had some stabillity issues on his 1155 gaming rig he build somewhere in late 2011 or early 2012. He thought it was CPU fault, 2500K almost 5 years OC'ed to 4.5GHz iirc somewhere around 1.3V. We tried his CPU on my Asus Z68 and it was rock solid on 4.5GHz @ 1.3V, then we tried my 2600K (4.6GHz HT here on my Asus Z68) on his GigaByte P67 mobo and we couldn't overclock it beyond 4.2GHz. So we reverted his 2500K into his GigaByte P67 mobo and lowered the OC to 4.2GHz @ 1.25V and no problems after that. Obvious case of mobo VRM degradation...

We also tried with few PSUs but no change on his side, VRMs o that cheap GigaByte P67 mobo were slowly dying.

    LOL

My 2600k requires 1.46V to do 4.8 stable. Will bench at 5.1 around 1.53V. I really just don't care about this CPU anymore. It's served me well for 5 years.

Yeah, if I was to keep it a little longer I would probably just push it until it breaks. But now the 2500k is seated in the Asus z77 pro with 16gb ram, waiting to be framed and go on the wall.

Been pricing out core components and the price difference is like a $140 spread between 7700k-1700x-6800k. The difference between 1700x and 6800k is like $60.

I still want to wait around for SLe and x299.

Yeah, you have a 2600k at 4.8ghz. I had a 2500k. I needed extra threads for the few games I play. If I had a 2600k like yours, I would still have it now :)

My old Opteron 185 needs a sightly vcore bump to work stable at 3Ghz, but after running at that frequency 10yr+ i can't complain :)
