Guys, I'm planning a general purpose PC for the following tasks: Running the house CCTV system. Home Server I planning this around an AMD APU system. Something like this I thought: I have a PSU, case and monitor already stood by for the build. I also have an old HIS 5850 GPU as well if I wanted to make this in to a sort of HTPC too. Any thoughts?
CCTV / DVR Card: I currently have 4 CCTV cameras installed on the house so only need a 4 channel card. However, I'm thinking of going with an 8 channel card so I can upgrade later. Checking this card out at the moment:
Would a Haswell Pentium / Celeron be sufficient for such a server? The ULV versions of these CPUs have crazy low power requirements and I'm planning to build an HTPC around one of them, with a low-profile GPU, soundcard, and TV Tuner.
Maybe. I thought I had my DVR card sorted until I noticed it wasn't compatible with AMD chipsets argh what a pain. The 100W TDP is off putting.
The intel path might be the better way to go, OR the newer 7600K with variable TDP that Hilbert tested a while back, assuming it's available. I repurposed my old X58 rig as a server, overclocked and undervolted, uses less power than it did running stock
You might want to consider the new Western Digital Purple drives that are specifically for CCTV applications. Like this 3TB: http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digit...812633&sr=8-9&keywords=western+digital+purple
I <3 Haswell Celeron ULV processors. hehe My laptop has a Haswell Celeron ULV processor....and at 1.6ghz no less. Those processors are insane value. If the wife wouldn't kill me for building yet another PC, I'd order the combo deal linked below and a low-profile GTX750 to replace my A4-5300 based HTPC. @Hallryu, see if you can get something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138393 Should be available for you....just google "biostar NM70I-1037U"
Nice suggestions, many thanks. I'll look in to those and tomorrow I'll amend my OP with an Intel rig to see what comment that generates.
If you are going to run CCTV, Media/HTPC from one server you should look into Linux Media Center (LinuxMCE).
When I read the original post, I got the impression that it might be used as a home server, but not that it would necessarily itself be an HTPC playing media. It may be streaming media files to other pc's though.
