Hi. I just changed to this CPU, and I'm trying a overclock it, but I'm really dont know much how it should behave. Most posts that I read, people say that it should make 4.5 stable at 1.38 to 1.45V, but here on tests, I need increase voltage up to 1525mV* to get it stable. * Actually its 1525~ on idle, but on load it drops to 1488~mV My motherboard is a Gigabyte 970A-DS3P latest bios, but I feel like it dont have a good control over voltages, and even clocks, I will list what I feel that is like a little strange to me. First, BClk is always 200.92mhz, and it makes other clocks a little of, like RAM, that is at 937, instead of default 933, HT at 2411, CPU on 4520, instead 4500, etc. Also, sometimes CPU just drops to 4488 or something like that (on CPU-Z) or sometimes 4675 or something like that, its random I think. I dont know if this is something related to "spread spectrum" or something like that, but I didn't find this option on the UEFI. Other thing is that, like I said, voltages are a little weird, drops on load, etc. VRM with +240mV, 4.5GHz, dont get very hot, 45C mosfet heatsink, I measured with a laser thermometer, and inductors at 60C~ I need +240mV to have a stable 4.5GHz on prime95 - I can boot up at 4.8 with this voltage, but it fail on Cinebench, I dont even tested prime at this frequency. +240mV at 4.5, with my water cooler it gets at 52C max - On AMD Overdrive (assuming that is 70 max temp), its not bad I think, but like I said, many ppl said that 4.5 should be stable at +100mV, 150mV or something like that.. idk.. I cant overclock NB, at all - even with +200mV, at 2200mhz, it just goes weird, even trigged one time the dual bios recovery on the UEFI. Also, I'm using DDR3 1866 memory, Hyper X Fury, single rank, 2x4GB - at manual 1.55V, because the auto mod, sometimes set the voltage to 1.45V, reports on AMD Overdrive at 1.47, so I bumped to 1.55 I dont know, it seems a little off, this results, should be better or I'm missing something?
I think you just hit the max overclock bro besides what more then 4.4 ghz do you need anyway? Fx chips are a little weird yeah plus to be honest you do not have the best motherboard for overclocking,you need something like a Formula-Z that has really good vrm cooling ect. I had Fx 6100,8350,9370,6300,8320e , they all behave same way.
That board doesn't handle overclocks very well. For higher clocks you'll need better cooling and a better board since those chips start getting unstable at ~60c. As for motherboards that are recommended: 990FXA-UD3 Rev 4.1, Formula-Z and the Sabretooth.
I had to change LLC and other things to prevent vDroop to stabilize mine Not sure if your board has the same options
+1 1.5v is about the max recommended for daily use. If your cpu is dipping/throttling then you maybe running into a temperature issue or the mobo may have a current limit to protect the vrm. The heat sink surface temp is not the same as the mosfet internal temp. That's like shooting a light on a cpu heat sink and assuming the cpu temp is good. I like that your trying to be thorough. Double check, make sure speed spectrum is disabled, cool n quiet is disable, c1e is disabled, c6 state is disabled, turbo mode is disabled, if available. Windows power plan is set to "high performance".
Like @Knox wrote dont go near 1.5v (1500mV) for daily use I have FX6300@ ~4.35 GHz on Asus M5A99FX Pro board on 1.35v (1350mV) i can get stable OC till 4.6GHz with higher voltage (haven't tried higher cause of temps) going any higher than 4.4 didnt seem to give much more perf even with high HT and chipset freq. but the temps gone crazy above these setting (at 1.38v my Antec 1250 and Raijintek Triton 240 couldnt manage to cool my CPU socket gone up to 70C and CPU to 62C) So it looks that you ale luckier with your FX
Try going for an FSB-oriented overclock. 4.4-4.8 are about the same (maybe even 4.3) at 200mhz fsb. Get that FSBto 230-240 and the gains much are better.
