Hi Guys, I have just upgraded a GTX260(216) to a new MSI GTX660, I know my system is pretty old but I thought it would still be a worthwhile last upgrade before changing a few more things, running a Intel Core 2 @ 3.15ghz and windows xp.. My benchmarks in game and 3Dmark06 are quite similar between the two cards, Old 260 (13823) new 660 (14898). Am I doing something wrong or is the low CPU stopping the kind of scores I was expecting, I was thinking it would be nearer 30000. What do you think ? Thanks.. Iain .
if i remember correctly, 06 was pretty CPU bound as i have similar experience (Athlon64 X2 5200+ @3.2Ghz with 9600GT vs GTX 460SE)
for benchmarks u need all round good pc if u want higher score. bus as u only changed the GPU i wouldn't be checking the final score as the cpu will be limiting the increase. Check the GPU score (i think 3dMark06 had separate GPU and CPU scores aswell) that should be waaay higher. And also check some gameplay performance. if it is smoother the u have no problem with it whatsoever.
Thanks guys, I did some checking in game, COD MW3 & couple of others, using Fraps it's reading about the same, this is not good news, I hope I haven't wasted my money on a new card here .. Is there anything else I should be looking for ? am I sounding more desperate here, I think so ..
Yip just running XP, so cant use that, seems like I'll have to put the old card back in and ebay the 660 ... if it's really useless in this system, cant afford to upgrade right now .. and remember it's not just 3dmark, I'm getting the same performance in games .
Its just a huge bottleneck. That 660 can not perform near its potential because its being held back by an old system. I know its not the news you want to hear, but that is the truth of it..
^ thats the truth. you're bottlenecked for sure. your cpu just holding back the potential it has. i got gtx 660 and i absolutely love it. i wouldnt even bother reverting back to what you had before. 24491 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660(1x) and Intel Core i5-2500K Processor SM2.0 Score 10108 HDR/SM3.0 Score 11304 CPU Score 6612
Try "Catzilla" benchmark (download FREE) because this program supports XP due to OpenGL but OpenGL 4.x has tessellation support.
You are HUGELY, MASSIVELY bottlenecked by that CPU. My temporary CPU in my profile is one heck of a bottleneck too.
A stock Core 2 E8400 held back my now lowly GTX 285, so yeah your 660 is definitely being held back. That and with Win XP you cannot take full advantage of your old DX10 card let alone a DX11 one. Is there a reason for not upgrading to something better? I believe till the end of the year you can get Windows 8 Pro upgrade for like $39.99 with any legit XP or higher O/S.
Not get Win 8 due to performance problems but yes get Win 7 x64. - If you have XP x86 then you keep this OS and add Win 7 x64 to dual-boot (must add 1 partition for new OS). - If you have XP 64-bit then you may upgrade to Win 7 x64.
What are games and/or programs?? But I prefer Win 7 x64 until the performance issues fixed (eg: 3DMark 11, WEI...) for Win 8.
There's no performance slowdowns in 3DMark11. WEI means absolutely nothing and it's using different scale now too, score is not comparable to W7 or Vista.
Ok, eg: GTX 680 gets really only ~8.1 (=performance issue) on Win 8 but GTX 670 or faster should get normally 9.9 on Win 8.
Cpu bottlenecked and if i see you PSU is at the limit there may be a problem to. Still go for Win 7 or Win 8 and do some testing you will see better results but not that high. P.S. No point of having on DirectX 11 card on Windows XP :bang:
