im open to both AMD and NVIDIA.

this 970 has a very loud very annoying sound when i fire up a game and im sick of it. i have had issues with this card (died twice had to RMA) and i just want to upgrade now, no wait since it's the only chance i will have this year.

i just want it to NOT be a reference card and be a jump from this 970 in terms of power.

I think the minimum coming from a 970 at the moment would be a 1070, anything less is more of a side grade. I think Vega is due to launch in a month or two, obviously that would depend on how long you were willing to wait. It depends on your budget also I suppose, the 1080ti has just launched and will probably be sat at the front of the pack for a good long while.

I had a look around, 1070's are roughly in your price range.

    ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1070: $369

EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 SC GAMING ACX 3.0 Black Edition: $389

The Zotac seems to be the cheapest non-refurb on Newegg, comes out to $369 when you add it to your cart. It also comes with a copy of Ghost Recon: Wildlands. The better options start at around $389.

Edit: Microcenter have some decent deals also.

Zotac GeForce GTX 1070 AMP! Edition 8GB: $384

If you've one local you could just pick it up and save the shipping costs.

The Zotac AMP! is a solid card, you can't really go wrong with it tbh.

1070. It's gonna give you about 70-80% better performance on average. It is a very noticeable improvement in (the very important) minimum frame rate you get in games.

    It is a big upgrade.

Pretty much all of the available brands have pretty solid offerings. The ones I linked are great options, there's also great offerings from the likes of MSI, Palit, PNY, Inno3D etc. I'd honestly just pick the card with the best hsf/warranty within your price range regardless of brand.

The 1070 has been out a while now, so there's tons of reviews for every model now, including any well known issues with specific brands.

Take a day off and go through all of them :p

My 1070 Gigabyte Windforce OC hits 1936 out of the box. It usually hovers at 1911 consistently though. No problems at all with it. I've seen the temp hit 71 once and that was the highest ever. Really quiet fans as well. It can be had for $375 on Newegg. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125875

ok update, i unseated the card, tightened the screws, changed the power cable and set the PC on the bottom of the desk instead of the top. the card is still a bit loud but its not making a grating sound anymore.

i still plan to buy a new GPU but im happy that sound is gone for now

if it stays like this i can maybe hold out till Vega or a 1080gtx

I'm glad you've managed to improve it, waiting a little bit longer is probably going to be best in the long run. That said, I wouldn't take the 1080 over the 1070 personally. I'd wait and see what Vega brings to the table, and decide between that or the 1080ti. If they're out of budget just grab a 1070.

    You have 2 choices here:

1- replace fan and shroud on 970.

2- use it as an excuse to get a new 1070.

    I vote #2....:D

wow i havent talked to you in more than 5 years hows it going?

if anything this gives me a chance to hold out just a bit more and get a 1080 or whatever AMD has to offer.

    What's your monitor?

1080 would be good for higher resolution and refresh rate panels.

1080 would be great for 1080p too, not just higher resolutions. This happens every generation, people say that the top end card is a waste for 1080p and then a year later we see it just about get 60fps at 1080p in latest games.

OP I'd go with a 1070 because it's great value, also maybe look into 980ti, overclocked they are slightly faster than overclocked 1070. I'd personally go with the 1070 though, if priced similarly, they run quieter and consume less power, easier to cool. 2 gb more vram too, but the 6gb on the 980ti will be enough for a while yet.

1070 all day. I have a EVGA myself. Huge upgrade from my old 780.

I recently jumped to a 1070 not for upgrade reasons but my 970 died and with the refund saw an opportunity. It is a nice upgrade and would be nicer if I had a stronger CPU to go with it however it's not leaps and bounds ahead of a 970 as some might think, you get anything between 35-50% fps gain dependent on the game.

Also in regards to fan noise and card quality though I definitely wouldn't scrimp when you get your new card, I'd personally recommend you get an EVGA card as I never hear mine. Avoid cheap AIB's like palit or PNY no matter how good the deals on them are.
