I overclocked my 3820 to 4.2 and getting 37-38idle and 62c at times in full load on games. I'm using air cooling and wanted to get to 4.6 but I think I'm as high as I can get safely just want to ask around see If I can get some info to see if it would be safe to go any higher like around 4.4.

It's at stock voltage for now to get to 4.6 I'll change it but is it ok to have close to 66c which is the max temp posted on intel for this processor?

intel posts the t-case temps (and probably conservative numbers at that), you can go higher than that. You're definitely fine in the 60s at full load.

Most of test reviews stated work temp at 80c (with ceiling at 90c).

Damn well if it would be ok at 80c then 4.6 will be fine but when I oc it it sometimes just powers down and says oc failed and sometimes Windows won't start I haven't had Intel before the oc on this is funny. But I def see a difference in gaming coming from a amd 955. Now I need to get a 4gb 670 or 770 don't know which though.

Those 3820's are an awesome chip huh? Performance near a 3960k and at a price just a tad over the 3770k On the futuremark website it's listed with the best price to performance ratio by far. I thought about getting one of those over a 3770k but then settled for the 3570k so i had a little extra money for graphics cards. But what are the drawbacks besides being harder to overclock compared to the 3960k-3930k?

3820? Less cores. Less L3 cache.

Huh? the only advantage a 3820 has over a 3770k is the X79 platform. The cpu itself isnt any faster and cant oc as well. Neither are near a 6core x79 in heavily multithreaded apps.

    Not only X79:

    i7-3770K
    Intel® Smart Cache 8 MB
Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VT-d) No

    i7-3820

I would say overclocked CPU temps up to 80 C under extreme stress testing would be perfectly fine as in practice your PC would never hit those temps during normal use, even while gaming.

For example, my own i7-920 @ 3.7 GHz using 1.275 V would hit 80-82 C during Prime95 but in reality the highest temps I've seen, since I've been running RealTemp in the system tray non-stop, is just under 70 C. That was during an hour-long Acronis True Image backup too when all 8-threads are stressed 100% for long periods, something that never happens with anything else, not even games. It typically maxes out at 65 C otherwise.

I am using a Thermaltake Frio cooler with dual-fans and although it is far from quiet, even on two-thirds speed, it does a fantastic job cooling my CPU. Better than my previous Cooler Master V8 anyway!

I got it to 4.5 in the bios it is kinda of hard to OC at first but when you know how I've seen it hit 5.0ghz in some reviews but that's with water cooling I've been air cooling and this processor already has been noticeably faster and In my borderlands 2 test where my 955 was holding back the performance of the game now runs smooth. But the processor can only do so much I'll need to upgrade my GC to get better performance in games like Batman AC and such.

I have been looking at radeon and they have great cards : ) I'm not biased but I'm thinking of upgrading from my 560ti to the 770 to bad the 4gb cards are all sold out I might have to just go with the 2gb version hopefully my upgrade of 16gb of ram will bridge that gap alil bit.

Another note on 3820 vs the 3770k The later is better even though it's at the end of the road for that socket it performs better in games and can OC better but the 3820 Is a great chip though It's not very far behind it in performance if you can Water cool it 5.0ghz or even just getting decent temps on 4.6-4.8 I've read the 3820 does good in rendering while the 3770k is only a hair under in performance I'd say If I had to do it again I'd still go this route because in a year I'll prob upgrade to the Hex core if I need too.
