    I still use a 4:3 display an HP1230. It hits as high as 2048x1536. Wish I had your GPU.
    I like to look at total pixels.
    1280x1024=1310720
    1920x1080=2073600
    2048x1536=3145728

    try downsampling, something like

    1600 x 1200 or go extreme 1800 × 1440

    This way you will have bigger FOV.

    I use to play at that reso not so long ago (1year or so) and when I bought new LCD 1080p it wasnt such a fps shocker, funny thing was I almost got the same fps, because I was still cpu bottlenecked Q9550@3.6ghz..

    Now with new cpu there is literally 100% boost in almost any game and I get better min fps then before @ 1280x1024 with old cpu xD

    Getting pretty tired of 'em tbh. I'm thinking of buying a 24" FullHD monitor, but that's only if I can upgrade my gpu to something better, but that's not likely in the foreseeable future. Hey, who knows, maybe I'll win a lottery or somethin' :D
