hi thinking of buying a 7990 but was wondering if it would be worth upgrading pc was mainly upgrading for pci express 3.0 support etc currently running eyefinitgy setup with 3x Benq G2420hdbl but wanting to run games on near to max or ultra settings
Firstly, I recommend gtx 690 instead of 7990. Its more powerful card. Secondly, i7 870 at 2.93 freq probably causes bottleneck if you buy either 7990 or gtx 690. At least overclock it or buy a new intel cpu.
690 is not more powerful. Better drivers yes. I won't dare argue that point. Also for the OP, Amd video cards are much less reliant on cpu performance, so the 7990 will be the better card for your computer. However if you can afford a 7990 I would get a new cpu too.
I would look for possibility of 2 HD7970,takes more space, but provides better cooling. Performance wise it would be same (7990 vs 2x 7970 or HIX 7970 X2). You may get better OC from 2 separate cards too. Considering price... quite a difference atm. But to the PCIe 3.0, no it makes no difference. Better CPU, faster memories does.
I have a 6990 as well, its just not worth it. The 6990 can keep up with the 7970 in most games. Normally when I want more FPS its in a CF supported game as well. 7990 or 7970 x2 is what we need, however we have to wait for the official AMD version to see if the price is reasonable....
That Krasus dude is on drugs... nvidia have better drivers? look at Tomb Raider. Always depends on the game. Pull that pin bro and do it, will be a better solution if you want to free up other pci-e slots for other cards tho the Club3d version takes up 3 bays lol, draw less power then two 7970's, they be the main reason why i got a 6990 which is still a high end card with the right configuration, grab it with an i7 3770K and you're laughing, don't touch it with an i3 or i5 and less then 12gb with a couple of ssd's. Be getting one myself >8)
Never claimed that Nvidia has better driver if you implied me. Also, I saw the powercolor hd 7990 card and it is worse than gtx 690. Just seeing the Club 3d version. My fault. However, my cpu advice still holds. i7 870 with 7990 or gtx 690 probably causes bottlenect at 2.93ghz.
yea, the 2gb memory holds the 690 back-also-don't expect heaven with the card on the multi monitor setup- two titans might be-not sure.with just fxaa enabled on a 1920-1080 p screen-both Crysis 3 and Tomb Raider are at 2 gb of ram usage- I traded my 690 for 2-670's with 4 gb of ram for that reason On the card bottle neck- most of the latest games are heavily graphics intensive which means the video card peters out before the cpu
I'm almost 90% sure that the 7990 (and a few other 7xxx series cards) can do compute far better than the GTX 6xx series. That is just compute though; but I assume there's some benchmarks and stuff for actual games available.
I would probably hold off until next gen at this stage. You would need 2 gpus to get a lot better performance than you have now. I would get a new HD8970 or GTX780 and add a 2nd when you need more power. OR pick up 2 680s or 7970s when the price drops when the next gen released. My 2c
aye makes sense, will probably wait till next gen i7 and 8 series cards, will give me time to save and games still run pretty well with current setup
If it was my money, I would say the same, keep the 6990, upgrade cpu and mobo. Then when new gfx cards are out, upgrade.
