I know there are simmilar threads in the forum already, but I guess it won't hurt to make another one, being more specific.

    So... at the moment I have an i7 920 @ 4Ghz + XFX HD5870 1GB. I'd like to upgrade to a GTX 770 or even a 780...
Now the problem: considering I use a native resolution of 2048x1152 with the possibility of later getting a 2nd monitor (or even a bigger one), should I go for a 780 or stick to the 770 until I do a full PC upgrade?
I'm inclined to a MSI GTX770 TF OC 4GB (N770 TF 4GD5/OC) (355€ here). This one is not bad either: MSI GTX780 TF OC 3GB (N780 TF 3GD5/OC) (480€). As you see, the 2nd one is a bit more expensive and I'm not sure if with this CPU it's worth it or not.

    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

You're CPU is going to be fine with either of tho's cards.

It's still a very good CPU.

Yeah your cpu is going to be fine, even if its not quite up to par with the newest, I doubt it would be more than a few frames anyways. Just get the best card you can afford, a 770 is a great card and if you can afford the 780 then why not. Either way, its going to be a HUGE upgrade that you will notice instantly ;). Enjoy whatever you pick.

You would be much happier with a 780 if you can afford it. 770 fps will plummet before you run out of video ram.

Hmm... the 780 price is a bit... too much. At least here. Damn! If I could sell the 5870 but I doubt anyone will give me anything for it right now.

The 770 will still be a massive upgrade. I went a similar route once. GTX 470 - GTX 680. It was at least twice as fast before I even got to work overclocking.

if that's the case, stick with the 770. they're great cards.

Hi, i already have MSI GTX780 TF OC 3GB and i want to tell you it is a great card (quiet, cool, good overclocker (modded bios) thanks to its twin frozr cooler) 14K in 3Dmark 11, what to ask else ?:)
i7 920 is a very good CPU too, you'll be fine.

Your 920 will do fine, it's only when you go SLI with these newer cards that you exceed it's limit.

It's a bit tricky though. The 780 has the extra CUDA cores (for work) but less RAM (also for work). The problem really is the price at the moment. The place I can order the 770 with 4GB doesn't have it on stock anymore. I'll have to wait and see.

It does make a difference if using a CUDA rendering program like Thea Render (that I'm trying to see if it's worth using for work). It can use CPU+GPU (the more cores and RAM the better). For gaming even a 280x would do.

780gtx has more grunt by raw cuda performance, 770gtx can be slower as GF110 at times.

Hi why would you go with old tech (GK104) where GTX 780 is newer and its 3 GB of VRAM will suffice for a long time.

My i7 920 CPU is "old tech" and guess what, it's doing very well these days. When I bought the HD5870 it was top of the line (single GPU) and it cost about 375 €. I'm not really in the mood to spend almost 500 € for a new GFX. I can, but I have other things to spend my money in (unfortunently). Sure I'd like to have a 780 but...

    lol gk104 is old tech released March 2012. a 770 is gk104 slightly faster than a 680 also gk104

You said all; GTX 770 is a renamed GTX 680 with higher frequencies, GTX 780 will be also old tech when Maxwell will be released :)

I just checked Thea Render and yeah 780gtx would run faster for sure, more cores, ROPS and higher vram bandwidth.

780gtx 6gb would be your ideal choice, but they're not so cheap or better yet custom cooled R9-290 4gb, should be cheaper then 780gtx 3gb.

Although Im sure this Thea engine uses some kind of texture streaming @ 1080-1440p 3gb should be enough, no?

770, or save a bit longer for the 780. Though if you choose the later, youd be better off waiting for the 8xx series imo.
