    If you like.

No matter how many examples are put on the table, the point will always stand that bus bandwidth or any other technical spec means nothing. It's the architecture you should be looking at.

I specifically mentioned the 480 to 580 performance increase. not much of an increase there, and I stated if gk110 is 384 bit you can expect a bigger difference from a 680 to 780 as compared to a 480 to 580. all these other nonsense comparisons mean squat. enjoy your 680 it is the high end now and do not get your panties in a bunch. I never said the card not high end, I said it had all the qualities of midrange except for price and performance.

Pure speculation based off of nothing. You're only making this assumption because of your own perspectives on how bus bandwidth works. Every single example in the past has shown that an increased bus bandwidth has massive diminishing returns beyond 256bit.

Looking purely at bus bandwidth means even more squat. If you were to look at clock speed or shader processors, then I would agree with you. But an increased memory bandwidth often times offers little overall improvement by itself.

No one's saying you claimed the card to be mid range. We're just pointing out the flaw in your statement of it having "mid range quality with high end performance".

look at the 460 560 256bit to a 480 580 384bit. the 384 bit cards are stronger. 480 to 580 same 384 bit bus same fermi not much difference. its not just the bus but the stronger gpu that comes with it.

You're right, the 384bit cards are stronger, but it's not because they're 384bit. The difference in performance largely comes from higher clocks + more shader processors + more texture/vertex units + more raster operators.

I stated that in the quote you are quoting?

Perhaps, though it wasn't worded in a way that I could consider to be clear to the point, so I would rather reiterate what you said in a clearer manner than simply assume you were saying something that you intended to come off differently.

stronger gpu= bigger die, more shaders, more rops, more memory bandwidth due to the higher bus. not neccesarily higher clocks though. hows that 680 running with that core 2 quad? please tell me you did not update your specs. peace out

Well enough for me to not have to worry about upgrading until I have the money for Ivy Bridge, but that's a discussion for another thread.

Does that mean the 680 is the 600 series equivalent of the 570? Now I'm confused. I was going the replace my 570 SLI with 670 SLI but should I be buying 680 SLI instead?

No that's what some people make of it. Nvidia advertised the GTX680 as their flag ship so it is a high end card. Doesn't matter what the specs are. These are the facts:

    - it is currently the fastest single gpu
    - it has the price of a flagship gpu
    - it has the name of a flagship gpu
    - it is the competitor of the HD7970 (amd's flagship). Nvidia even compared the GTX680 with the HD7970 in their reviewer's guide.

According to rumors, the GTX670 and the GTX670 Ti will launch in May.

ok but I don't agree because GTX 680 doesn't succeed GTX 580 but yes GK100 (GTX 685) or 110 (GTX 780) will succeed GTX 580.

    look:
    1920x1200 resolution
    GTX 680 is ~15% faster than HD7970.

    2560x1600
    680 is ~5% faster than 7970
Therefore, GTX 680 is weak memory bandwidth for extreme resolution + high AA. ;)

Hardly likely when a 7970 has alot more memory bandwidth that a 680.

It struggles to beat the 7970 by more at 25x16 due to having less vram, though we will find out for sure when the 4GB cards appear.

Actually, looking at the hardocp review, the GTX680 holds his ground pretty well at high resolutions. In their SLI review for example, they've compared the GTX680 sli vs the HD7970 crossfire in BF3 MP at a resolution of 5760x1200. I don't know about you but for me, that's a pretty high resolution and a good indicator to see if the "weak" memory bandwith has a negative impact on the GTX680. According to their review, the GTX680 actually allowed higher settings than the HD7970. I think you agree as well that BF3 MP is very demanding at high resolutions so comparing these two cards according to their specs, the HD7970 should have the advantage but it doesn't.

I bit the bullet and ordered 2x MSI 680 TwinFrozr III's. Should have them in a few days.

Is it a good idea to SLI them having those coolers?
I was going to buy those too, but as far as I know, to SLI its better the reference cooling system.

So does that mean the GTX580 wasn't the succesor to the GTX480? The numbers were the same between the two.

The GTX 580 became what the GTX 480 was supposed to be (full number of workingshader units).

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't GTX 680 supposed to be a "gamers" card where it's "pro" video rendering performance and abilites for professional use actually are lower than the GTX 580 ?

The "low" bandwith of GTX 680 as a high-end card also makes me wonder... why did nVidia go back to a 256bit ram connections instead of 384bit like GTX 580... or at least 320bit like GTX 570 ?

With GTX 670 incoming I wonder if we have a GTX 666 in the horizon ?

I have no clue but the reviews for the 680 TwinFrozr III's have been good.

If you have plenty of ventillation then having two of those in sli wont be a problem , but if your case has bad airflow like my Corsair 800D then its not a good idea to have two Twin Frzor GPU's in your case.
