    Really happy with how it turned out, easily beat the 5870 in nearly everything, and the newer the game the larger the lead, which means that performance is going to get better with each new driver and game that is released, even ATI optimised games such as Dirt2 and Hawx seem to be faster on the GTX480, and 470 compared to the 5850.

    Power consumption is irrelevant to me, this is a enthusiast site, so think people are just nitpicking just for the sake of it.
    Price is a touch high, but considering how much i like and use Cuda applications, PhysX and other GGPU app's, the higher price seems more justified, if you don't use these things then the 5870 is the better option though.

    Only thing missing compared to the 5870 is the HD audio support, which is a shame.

    Like I predicted these cards would face some problems because of:
    1. Way too many transistors for 40nm, a shrinkage refresh is needed
    2. 384bit memory interface doesn't really add much except heat and cost

    Crysis warhead on gamer mode 1920x1200

    480= 60 frame average
    5870=40 frame average

    Yep 480 is a failure /sarcasm

    A few driver improvements + some overclocking and this card should annihilate anything even more, defo going to get one.

    @http://www.techspot.com/review/263-nvidia-geforce-gtx-480/page9.html

    It beats the 5970 is farcry 2, resident evil 5, battelforge, and equals the 5970 is crysis warhead and several other games.

    It is more towards the 5970 is terms of performance, but there are a few examples where it falls flat, and considering the raw performance I would say driver updates could easily fix that.

    at last!

    well i must say the GTX480 did really well performance wise considering its a single gpu its as fast or faster than a GTX295 in most games, also exactly what i expected much faster than a 5870 in some games and marginally faster in others.

    also again as expected my 5970 is simply the monster of the moment even though the gtx480 came really really close in a couple of benchies.

    the temps of the card is nothing, 95c sounds really hot right? but i had my 4870x2 running often as high as 105c when the room temps was high without a single problem for over a year and a half, the cards are designed to run this hot, unless your case is poorly ventilated i see no reason for paranoia, watercooling is a good idea but maybe not so much for the average person.

    not to brag but i can finally say that i am proud to have bought that 5970 a couple month ago, especially after seeing the GTX480 benchmarks, sure it was a lot of money but well spent and the card should last me over a year easily, if the 5970 did not exist i would've gotten myself the GTX480 which is a great card, the price 499$? pretty good considering the performance, but it won't please some people who wanted it to cost 400$ or so.

    good review Hilbert, congrats. :p

    I am torn apart, HD 5870 CF is 150€ more, runs cooler and needs less juice.

    I watched the [H] videos about the fan and man thats too loud for me.

    Performance wise good, availability, heat, power consuption and noise = bad.

    Great review as always Hilbet , thank you. Im very dissapointed , i was expecting a little bit more of those cards when compared to the 58xx cards :/ , pretty toasty 95c :eek: , they suck big time for benchmarking purposes and i knew that a while ago. by the time they get a performance driver ATI should have something new out there and then i will jump back to ATI , Meh, waiting all this time for almost the same performance as ati cards its a Fail in my book :giggle2:. Thank you for the awsome review but i will pass on this nvidia generation ,something that i have not done in many years , oh man trully dissapointed. ( My opinnion)

    The GTX 470 doesn't sound bad at all.

    The GTX 480 draws as much power, costs as much, runs as hot, as a GTX 295 and it doesn't always beat it. WOW :bang:

    Just because the 480 is almost equal to 5870 crossfire is no reason to get defensive, i'm sure the 480 be even better in a few months...

    Great review. GTX480 seems to be very tempting, but I would need two of those :(

    Perhaps dual GTX470 with watercooling would be epic. But well, I'm giong to check prices in Finland before ordering.

    Interesting how close to HD5970 GTX480 is in FarCry2 and it even beats HD5970 in CoD-MW2 and CoD-W@W. Just Cause 2 seems to need driver update from ATI. Metro2033 performance is damn impressive.

    Good to hear that increasing fan speed temps did drop and noise did not increase that much.

    I knew it wouldnt be double however the most staggering part of the bench is the AA to performance trade off, X8AA to 32Xaa only 15% trade off, DAAAAAMN!!!.

    That is very very impressive. Holy ****.

    That was the most promising of the article is the AA to performance trade off, that part of the article Really caught my eye wide open, DAMN!.

    Hey Hilbert do X8AA multi-sampling then do 32X aa w/super sampling, I want to know the difference, Yummy.

    Super-Sampling gives a Tremendous hit on performance, does the new gtx 400 series use multi-sampling or super-sampling??

    Are the temps that surprising? When i bought my 8800GT, the card would hit 90 degrees with stock cooler and idle above 50. An aftermarket cooler solved the problem.
