On the mighty interwebs nothing is safe really, photo's emerged of a Radeon R9 290X from Gigabyte that is cooled with their popular WindForce X3 cooler. The product carries SKU code GV-R929XOC-4GD...

  2. Ugh this is one I won't consider buying.

A lot of cases of dead Gigabyte cards recently.

At least it's a sign the custom cards are coming soon. It's as if the existing 290/290x were entirely different products. I guess being able to OC without throttling and making us deaf, makes a world of difference.

Supposedly coming in about 2 weeks, or around CES 2014, can't wait for the customs :D

lol they are prolly taking forever as they are having trouble cooling the cards properly....with as hot as these cards get...3rd party coolers are going to dump all that hot air in the case....I bet the aftermarket coolers are barely keeping the cards in the mid 80's

Oh they will keep them cooler then that for sure. Considering that the olden golden accelero 3 was keeping these cards cool.

  6. They are taking so long because AMD is being a jerk and not allowing them to be released.

    Nonsense.

Ref GTX580 ran in the upper 80's (87-90°C degrees) with about the same TDP, then came GIGA GTX580 with the same 3x windforce design and the temps were dropped to 65c-68°C.

By that logic and in the worst case scenario we should see temps somewhere in the 75-80°C range and only if OC'd it might be hitting 90°C but that's expected..

Agreed orky87, though from what I've read the temps would be closer to 60-65 going on the Accelero and Gelid ICY conversions I've seen. With water the 290/X cards are going below 50 easily.

It is all about the transfer of energy, watts used translates into heat. So even your 780 is outputting similar heat levels, it just has a better cooler then reference 290x but the amount of heat dumpped in the case is similar for aftermarket coolers from both camps.

Sorry to disappoint you, but not really. ;)

Someone @overclockers.uk took off ICQ2 HIS cooler from 280X and mounted it on 290x and what do you know max temp was ~ 58-62C, OC'ed to 1100-1200mhz max 72 or 75C yes in furmark.

AMD just saved some cash on the cooler, understandable due to the lack of funds compared to Team Green, but still not acceptable. The AM coolers will change the boundaries of OC'ing these things dramatically. Get a water loop on one and you'll be set for a while!

Cannot wait for the reviews of these cards.
Suspect the aftermarket coolers will let the thing run at 65-72c which is about the same as 780 Ti aftermarket cards, seeing they use the same amount of power.

The 290 aftermarket cards are gonna fly off the shelves the minute anyone has them in stock, mark my words.

That's weird... It may sound strange, but what if AMD have designed a not so good reference cooler on purpose?

From a strategic point of view just look at nVidia they had locked cores, locked volts and low core clocks just waiting to see AMD's numbers.

AMD shows up, nVidia takes action removing limitations and they're on top again.

Now nVidia has no more tricks up it's sleeve for their current single GPU and so it's AMD's turn to show what they are capable of by improving cooling and feeding the core with plenty of power hopefully leaving some head room for OC'rs.

Perfect example of how competition works.

Considering a fully unlocked GK110 chip was only recently revealed, I doubt anyone is ready for 20nm even if on the smaller scale (think GK104 - Tahiti) soon.
