Yes, I was reading some reviews on Newegg saything that they could run it with a 300W (18A) PSU. But don't take my word seriously, I always could be wrong. Mike.
Hi Yes it is, I had tested one with an OEM 300W PSU, and no problem at all, and I was able to overlcock too. BTW the testing was using an DFI UT NF4 Lanparty Expert with DVD and an 80Gb PATA HDD. The 8600GT does not need PCI-E power connector, it takes the power needed from the PCI-E slot. All the best aGeoM Edit: 300W PSU 15A
AFAIK, the requirements for the 8600GT are: 350watts 22amps on the 12v rail But to be honest, many folks can get by with 18 amps, even with better cards than that one. I'd say try it on your current psu first unless it's some no-name junk psu.
That depends on what the manufacturer decides what requirement they want to put on their box to cover themselves. My 8600GT XXX states 300w but that is all subjective. How good your psu is and how many amps on the 12v rails is what matters. 18amps is fine for the 8600GT. My 305w psu has 22amps and I could run a 8600GTS with 22amps, but I'm waiting for a better choice or prices to come down some more.
Unless it's grossly overrated a PSU rated 450w and 18 amps likely has two 12v rails one of which is 18A. Regardless of how many amperes the second rail has the total is in all likeliness above 22A
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the 8600gt does not require an additional power cable and draws whatever power it needs from the PCI-express port, which can supply up to 75W. With this in view, I don't think the 8600gt would need a particularly powerful PSU at all and that most, even OEM PSUs would be just fine.
the 8600GT requires 45watts to power it but the recomened PSU for it is 350watts with 22amps. 8600GTS requires 71watts but has an extra PCI-e power connector to be on the safe side. the recomened PSU for the 8600GTS is 400watts with 26amps.
