this might have been asked a lot already but i could always trust you guys here with my purchases in the past so i am seeking advice again on my cpu upgrade plans. :) as the title says i am unsure what cpu brand to go with these days (i remember back when i got my current q6600, amd was basically out of question and intel was the only real choice...) but i think this isn't the case anymore. so in the course of a new cpu i will also need a new mainboard + ram as well. for the moment i won't be interested in overclocking and hope that i will be fine with stock settings.

    amd:

    intel:

so out of these two lists which do you consider best? or do you have suggestions for a different mainboard/ram?
oh and both are about the same in total price (~€350) which also equals my budget.

Both are better than what you currently have. So play heads or tails and pick one. :nerd:

Intel Q6600 is still a strong cpu
i would stick with intel, it has stronger core performance.
it is very noticeable compared to my fx8350 amd media center
the I5 ivy beats it in gaming performance hands down

This thread is now monitored, this is a flame war waiting to happen.

Personally, both would be fine, I'd personally go with AMD build, especially since the motherboard has a MOSFET heatsink. If you can get a better board on Intel, you can go for the Intel build. At this point, it's just all about preference.

Between the two I would be inclined to say go with the AMD but get the 8320 over the 8350 as you can over clock both and the 8320 is the smarter buy. The intel is a non K sku so very limited on its over clock.

+1. AMD might be more futureproof with AM3+ socket... Intel chance em all the time

It really shouldn't be, it's a perfectly legitimate question to ask. I vote for the Intel build because it doesn't need a better VRM phase and mosfet heatsink because it doesn't have to feed almost 200W of power.

CPU and motherboard are often things that you don't change often. Usually it's the GPU that changes most often and if the OP decides to get a higher performance grade GPU, it will likely need to use more power.

I usually would overprovision on the CPU and motherboard because I rarely switch out either component unless they're 5 years old or can not keep up with my workload, whichever comes first.

As for the question itself, it's a legitimate question, but that doesn't mean there wouldn't be a chance for a flame war as these types of threads tend to spiral down that path.

What do you plan to use the PC mostly for? For stuff like video encoding the AMD with it's around 6 cores (4 modules) should be a little better, yet when it comes to gaming, the Intel is the better choice.

thanks for the answers so far. really didn't want to start a flame war with this thread and to be honest wasn't aware it would create and actually it hasn't turned into one. just thought this was a legitimate question to ask for someone who hasn't been following the development the past years and is unsure on how to spend his money.
anyway, to answer the question on what i am and will be using my pc for is mainly gaming, watching videos and browsing the internet. i won't do any video/audio editing or 3d rendering stuff.

no it's not. I will chip in and say I'd take the i5 3570k if you can afford it but I'm slightly biased because I love my 2500k so... if you can't afford the K version of the 3570, go with fx 8350/8320. either way, you'll see a nice performance increase.

At 1080 the difference won't be as great.

OP if you are going to go with a single gpu the the difference will for the most part not be noticeable.

Yeah, you can get an overclock of 4.5GHz with modest effort.
