27" pls, 29" ips or 120hz 1080p?

  1. Ive read that amd cards have less success with the overclocking, do you know much about that?

    Generally :
Different generations of cards overclock to different levels.
Different driver versions allow overclocks to different levels.

There are 'unlimit' driver patches that allow you to crank up the hz on driver versions that are locked.

From what I remember from the 120hz.net forums, ~90hz is about the lowest overclock you can expect from the most limited hardware [and no driver limit].
*You would have to check the forums if you don't want to rely on my fuzzy memory.

On video cards that are of a capable generation (eg. 500,600,700/Titan), with an unrestricted driver, you will max somewhere between 100hz(rarely this low) and 140hz(rarely this high), with 120hz being extremely common.
This is because different monitors max out at different levels. All the GPUs in this class can drive the monitors at over 140hz - even if the monitor can't handle it.

    ATI/Nvidia wise :

Recent nvidia hardware will overclock over 120+hz, and recent drivers allow 120+hz overclocks without patching.

You will have to check the forums on 120hz.net to see the specific current state of ATI hardware.
I haven't read them in a bit, so I just don't know what's going on in that regard.

Current ATI hardware can't increase the pixel clock past 500, which generally means a 100Hz limit. This is the same for Nvidia SLI, and anything pre 500 series.

AFAIK: 500mhz is what you need to hit 120hz refresh, and the problems were from limits below 500.

The SLI limit has been patched out - but only for 600 series and up.
    http://direct.120hz.net/showthread.php?747-NVIDIA-Pixel-Clock-Patcher-SLI-Limit-Unlocked!

Check this patch to go 120hz with ati:
    http://www2.120hz.net/showthread.php?270-Modified-AMD-ATI-driver-to-allow-higher-refresh-rates
    http://www.monitortests.com/forum/Thread-AMD-ATI-Pixel-Clock-Patcher

From reading that ATI thread, there seem to be mixed results. Some 90+hz early in the thread, and some 120+hz later in the thread. Not terribly consistent chatter.

    I thought 500 was too low for a 2560x1440 panel for 120Hz, but I don't remember.

I didn't remember either, but the threads mentioned 330 for ati and 400 for nvidia, and 'needing very high 400s almost 500' to hit 120.

    What?

Ive had 580 sli and 680sli working with 120hz @ 2560x1440, which btw is 463-470 pixel clock. And there are pixel clock patches for older cards.

@OP get a 2560x1440 120hz monitor, best of both worlds. 1080P sucks to me now and i cant deal with 60hz for gaming either.

Get it. Nothing out there is better.

  9. Catleap, ur mine as soon as my tax refund arrives :)

Sorry for the late reply. Anyways the monitor is top notch, I got a A-, hardly any back light bleeding, color production is as good as my 27in apple monitor(same panel). Minimal input lag, great for gaming. Now overlord vs catleap, they are the same. Just a different housing. Overlord has a better stand than the catleap which wobbles pretty bad. As for the 120hz, it's not built into the edid. What you have to do is go into nvcpl or cru and create 120hz res. now you aren't guaranteed to hit 120hz but 98% will hit 110hz. 30-40% will do 120hz or better. Mine will only do 118-119hz.

Cheers for that, yeah ive heard the difference between 96 and 120mhz is not alot compared to 60 and 96 so i would be happy at 96.
Did you go for the Anti Glare screen or the other one?
Also do you get coil whine?

    Yes, they're around $400.
    Check ebay for it :)
Recommend reading the thread I linked before purchasing.

Cool. Thanks for the head's up.
    I ordered a qnix qx2710 for $308 shipped.
Will see how it compares to the catleap.
    If it's as good, I'll get like 2 more just to have 3x 1440p @120 + a spare.

Personally, if you need matte, I recommend buying glossy and then putting on a matte screen protector.

That way, if you decide that you would prefer glossy later on, you can just take off the screen protector.

Im trying to buy one of the AG ones now but i cant as there is a problem with there gateway. Hopefully will be sorted soon and ive sent them an email. These will be sold out in a day i reckon....

@scheherazade... i would but there are no glossy ones left, My Dell U2410 has a AG screen as standard so im used to that so shouldnt be a problem hopefully:)

They also sell a PCB that enables you to oc any LG panel from 60hz to 120hz. I think my Dell u2410 has an LG panel fitted as standard so i could buy the PCB and try overclocking that as well.

Edit....Damn it there sold out FFS:bang:
