Is 780ti "too much" for 1080p ?

I think that's why my son wants a console rather, we spend so much time configuring a computer, having to use different drivers etc to get decent performance, and then when you actually get something decent you have lost interest already. I need to find a cheaper hobby.

Having a gaming pc as your hobby was never a cheap thing though ;)
To me it's more the matter of convenience and flexibility with console vs pc.

Actually, the freedom of being able to change both hardware and software is what keeps my interest in PC gaming... the reward of improved visuals and 60 fps gaming is worth it for me.

But I do agree, port coding needs improving.

    Really?

You can't play a game that runs at 80fps-115fps????

Are you serious? Other than some screen tearing which you will only noticeif you have a crap monitor then the game will be extremely responsive and fluid.

Its only really when the fps dips below 60 do you feel the lag as your monitor isn't getting the fps it wants. This is where FREE SYNC and GSYNC come in to play.

But not being happy with 80-155fps is just silly.

I would say go fo it 780Ti looks ideal, especially for next-gen games next year ie U4E, that extra power will come in handy.

My 780gtx max Oc'ed 1215mhz is a little faster or around 780ti ~ 1050 - 1100mhz fixed clock and I found few games that its not fast enough @ max settings 1080p.

SeriusSam3 needs small OC if Im using msaa and all eyecandy on 60fps+, Crysis3 max OC and smaa only (shading - high is ok, like any Crysis so far..), Bf4 medium OC if I want to keep above 90ish fps, BF3 medium Oc if I want to keep near 120fps limit. TR2013 medium OC with TressFX to be above 60fps,.. Rift small OC with SSAA to be near 70fps limit all the time.

WatchDogs ran ok, even stock boost that's if i ignored stutters (50-55fps drops), avg 68-79fps @ 2xtxaa or 4xmsaa rest ultra. Idk now I uninstalled it.

Rest is fine stock 954mhz boost 1097mhz.

80-115FPS @ 144Hz is a whole different matter than @ 60Hz. You're assuming he meant at 60Hz. He doesn't. 80FPS will stutter at 144Hz, but it will not stutter as much @ 60Hz. At that point you choose whether you would like a 60FPS-ish experience all the time or reduced lag and increased responsiveness with some stutter when your FPS fluctuates below 120-144Hz.

The monitor has nothing to do with tearing. Tearing occurs on every single frame if you're not using VSync. Check the G-Sync slides. Monitors with strobe backlights will make tearing even more noticeable since there's no LCD sample-and-hold motion blur anymore.

    @OP: you seriously need G-Sync.

It was always 30+fps last time i dicked with it, would hover between low 30s to upper 40s on paracel storm map

It looked like ass though, all the blurring was terrible. 2x2 supersampling looked tons better, as did 4xmsaa+4xsgsaa.

No 1 780 ti is not overkill for 1080 and high refresh rates.

    huh???

so yeah, this confirms it, 1x 780ti is in no way overkill even for 1080p/60hz, if you want to max things, just like I said.

    OP just go for it.

This was a response to that. 30+ fps all the time. an average of 40~ fps at 2560x1440 res maxed out, which effectively is a resolution of 5120*2880 with 4xMSAA, way more pixels than 4k res. At 1080P you are effectively adding 20fps more, which means a 780ti can handle it.

Moot point anyways, bf4 with 200% res scaling looks like ass, nobody uses that., too much Vaseline effect.

Proof? You got your numbers completely wrong. I would like to see that 30fps, I got nowhere near it on my rig, even running mantle. Not to mention 7950 cfx will destroy a single 780ti in bf4.

And no, 780ti can't max every game out at 1080p/60hz, I've named a few games that won't run 60fps and there's more games like that out there.

Btw, here's bf4 at 4k, 0xAA. 780ti averages 37fps. Running 1080p with 200% resolution scaling and 4xmsaa is a lot more demanding than 4k no AA. So yeah, pretty much single digits, teens at best. http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2013/11/27/battlefield-4-performance-analysis/6

    Edit: here's another link http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/gtx_780_ti_sli_geforce_review,23.html

So yeah, I don't see a 780ti running 1080p, 200% resolution scaling and 4xmsaa at anywhere near 30fps. That's roughly 4k performance with no AA. Bf4 all maxed will tank badly. Sure, a bit irrelevant, but let's get numbers right, right? Btw, those charts show single player campaign performance. Run online, big maps, 64 players, you will see single digits in busy moments. Can't prove it, because there's no such chart out there, but I've seen it with my eyes and the charts I linked suggest low performance. At least stick to your guns next time and do go backpedaling on what you said.

First of all, no. Unless we have a different definition of "destroy". Secondly, you mention that 1080p with 200% and 4xmsaa is way more demanding than 4K, then you say it's comparable. Which is it?

I may just be taking the piss, but this argument you're trying to present baffles me a bit. There's only a handful of circumstances where a 780Ti can't handle 1080p with 60+fps. It's a strong card. You can only kill it with a dump truck worth of unnecessary AA, which I doubt the OP is dead set on doing.

That's roughly 4k performance, meaning that's how the card will perform at 4k. Running the game all maxed will of course be demanding.

I'm typing from the phone. And imo 33 vs 46 fps is a pretty big difference.

And sure, a 780ti is a great card, but it ain't max everything. More often than not due to sh1t coding than anything else

If that setting basically equates to 4K, why is it even being considered? It would make more sense to measure the performance with super sampling AA.

You just proved my point yourself, since 1080 maxed is roughly 4k performance, and that link you shared shows a Ti with 33 fps on 4k res... Single player is solely gpu limited, as it would be maxed on a multiplayer map, only on lesser settings would it become CPU dependent...

Not to mention weve had two different driver releases that improved DX11(aka mantle update) speed improvements, and 4k res improvements, i know for a fact that single digits is not right.

This is a thread about 1080P, not 4K or 1080P with 200% resolution scaling..Deal with it, a single 780 Ti is enough for 1080P, maybe not for 60fps solid in every game, but it is more than playable in every title out there.

Getting 60FPS in Metro LL maxed @ 1080p with a single 780Ti is almost impossible.
Even MP3, AC (a very good Alpha) & NFS MW maxed will cause it to drop on its knees.

Well if we go to the past than Ps3 and Xbox 360 were on par with HIGH END PCs or better that is why it performed better till 2009 but now that is not the case at all because So Called Next Gen console are not even par with Mid range PCs and that is a fact and that is why we are seeing so many delays and downgrades.

Some people have misjudge meaning or concept of optimizing on Console and optimizing does not mean that console will perform similar or better $1000 or even $600 PCs and fact is it cannot and never will out perform PCs.Tnks to AMD now PC and Console are much closer than ever so u can expect GTX 780 or R9 290 to run game Ultra setting for much long time period than before.

I do remember running bf4 at stock gpu settings (1045mhz with boost) on SP with resolution scaling running at max and it did bring my card to its knees, it was so bad you could count individual frames.

At the end of the day a 780ti is one of the best cards you could get so whether your on 1080p or 1440p 1600p etc it dont matter, may as well go buy one if your out for a new card.

Saying that 880 is coming in 1 month so i would wait.

I doubt factoring in how BF4 performs at 1080p with 200% resolutions scale is useful. It's effectively 4K and if you're downsampling, you're asking for huge performance hits TBH. i would only ever consider downsampling when I have loads of GPU power available for a non-demanding game, and even then I never remembered an experience where I thought it looked sharper than just rendering at native res.

I wouldn't run a 780Ti at 1080p 60Hz because the card's potential can be opened up at higher refresh rates / resolutions, but if I were to get a card for 1080p 60Hz, there's nothing wrong with grabbing a 780Ti and making out games. I would however be wanting to drive something higher on such a card.
