Hello guys, i have never done OC in the past but today i was thinking maybe i could OC my i7 920 a little bit, lets say from Turbo boost 2.9 ghz to turbo boost 3.5 if possible, i have got a D0 stepping i7 920 and an msi pro e X58 and a hyper 212 push pull config, id like to do a slight OC, not too much because i want the mobo to last, i mean its been working for some years now but id like to keep it working for some other good years on another system after i upgrade next year.
So the main question is, is there any easy and safe way to do so? any way that wont hurt the mobo/make it run hotter?
    Thanks in advance! n.n

btw my Northbridge gets to 60C while gaming and the i7 gets to 62C max HT ON.

Never had an i7 of any sort myself. Is 62c while gaming normal? My i5-650 only gets up to 52c and its oc'd to 4.5ghz..... I would check for air bubbles in the thermal paste, of re adjust the air flow, check for dirt in the fans etc. If this is a normal temp, start by just raising the bclck by 10 on every boot running stability tests when you get into your os. When you find the number that hits unstable, dial it back. Then try upping the voltage, rinse wash repeat. Keep a temp monitor running, and make sure you don't get anywhere near the max Tcase.

You have a dual core, you can't compare temps with a quad core like that. 62C while gaming is perfectly normal. Maybe a little high for stock speeds, but normal nonetheless.

With the i7 920 D0 you should be able to hit 3.6GHz pretty easily.

I had mine at 3.6GHz (200x18) @ 1.29v and it was rock solid.

To overclock these chips you need to up the BLCK (known as the base clock)

200 is pretty normal for most x58 boards

You will need to up the multiplier as well to achieve higher core clocks the higher you go with the BCLK. 200 is pretty much the limit most people got to, 220 I have seen but that is pushing it.

I would up the BLCK from stock 133 I think it is. I had mine on 1.325v for 200BLCK. These are just guidelines so don't take for granted you will get the same, you may get less you may get more.

My settings from what I remember where

    CPU Vcore 1.29v
    QPI/DRAM voltage 1.325v
DRAM voltage : 1.5v (depending on RAM but dont go over 1.65V)
    CPU Spread Spectrum Disabled
    PCIE Spread Spectrum Disabled
ALL thermal throttling Disabled (such as TM Function, C1E, Speedstep)

I honestly can't remember any other settings, It was rock solid stable though in Prime 95 small fft for 6hours and it never got above 65C across all cores. This was using a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme cooler. The Hyper 212 is a very good cooler but its limited.

Make sure you have god air flow as well.

    EDIT:

Give this a read its very informative and might help you understand better.

Thankyou i am going to read it! i just pushed the bclock a little bit (150) to achieve 3.2 Ghz and im going to test it after i read! Thanks!

  6. mine was fine n dandy when oc'd
    1.3v

Got mine stable at 4.00Ghz. Using a corsair custom cooler.

For a moment i thought you're wrong, cause i always thought all i5's are quad, but then i've read it online.

It has 2 physical cores and 2 threads. :bang:

Yeah, back in the day, Clarkdale was dual core/four thread. Just like the i3's today.

I'm on an i7 920 right now, but with disabled Turbo it gets more stable for me

C1E, EIST, Speedstep is activated Turbo is deactivated @ 1.2375v

    20x 186MHZ @ 1.2375 are rockstable for me! loadtemps on 66-67C
