They always advertise this, but the reality will be with binning that most chips will max out at like 4.4ghrz and will never be able to reach 5ghrz. You'll have to be extremely lucky unless you're a reviewer, to which they'll ship out the best silicon.

Well they said a lot of good things about Haswell too. I'll believe it when I see people actually use it. RPGgamesplayer, you are the chosen one :D

I don't know why they ever stopped using solder as the TIM, stupid move.

I believe that they used low quality tim on purpose since the release of the i7 3770k.
Just imagine if they used a good cooling solution with solder like the I7 2700k, that can run at 5ghz at a safe voltage.

If they used the same cooling on the i7/i5 3770k along with the 22nm die shrink
and with a release of another cherry picked model like the i7 2700k that can hit 5ghz,
then it would not make sense for anyone to upgrade who has a i7/i5 3770k build.

They would have native intel usb 3 ports pci -e 3.0 sata 3 and plenty of horse power and no need to upgrade
until Intel releases 6 or 8 core mainstream cpu's,along with a nice performance jump of let's say 50%.
That would be bad for Intel in terms of sales.
Like many first gen i7 users who have not upgraded yet since those chips still hold strong in performance until today.

Nice to see better overclocking potential (theoretically). My first gen i5 750 ran circles around my current CPU as for as overclocking and heat goes. Of course the i7 3770k destroys it performance wise. :)

The 4790K have a very nice base and turbo boost clock. Very nice for people that don't overclock. Yes i know people that is never into overclocking but they en up getting the k cpu anyway

Err what?? These are the top of the line chips. Intel wont advertise them as being capable of 5ghz, this is just a guess.

An over-optimistic guess I suspect but if people can get anywhere from 4.7ghz - 5ghz on air, the overclocking community will be quite happy and this would be a nice leap from Haswell in-terms of OC ability.

Have you ever considered that maybe solder isn't as simple or even possible on the new, smaller chips and 3d transistors they're using? It's not like the cost difference between solder and TIM is anything noteworthy. The idea they did it just to annoy overclockers or save a buck is laughable frankly.

A buck on a million CPUs is $1,000,000......

If the i7 4790K maxes out at 4.4ghz....there's going to be a LOT of pissed off overclockers.....especially given that 4.4ghz is the stock boost clock.

Memory overclockers going to be happy since the Controller is back on the motherboard.

I'm in too. We can start up the 4790k club.

Where do you see this? I know there were rumors about broadwell removing VRM's back but I doubt they would take the memory controller off, especially with a refresh.

Wow I was going to get just the 4770K but after hearing this I will now be getting the 4790K. This is what I call a refresh. Man It would be nice to see beyond 5ghz like 5.2 or so. Since we have seen like 4.7-4.8 out the amazing group of 4770k processors it would be nice to see up to a GHZ difference from that. But there is always that chance of it not happening.
