    36Mp........ from Nikon?

Seems unlikely to me. Be more like 16Mp knowing Nikon.

Seems crazy if it is. Be interested in the low light performance with a sensor that big.

according to dom bower (if you're a subscriber to his channel in YT), it's practically the same as the D7000 sensor only enlarged to full frame levels... so low light should be very good. but then again, all the info on the interweb are speculations.

also, i'm not really buying the the MP-count wars. my D7000's 16MP is more than enough for me, 36MP are practically medium format size.

Yeah, I got a D7000 myself, GREAT camera and good value for money, great low light performance, even iso 6400 looks great.

Compared to my old D300 the D7000 at iso 6400 looks like D300 at 1000...

yeah.. the D7k really is great value for your money. i love mine. it opens up a new world for me with its great ISO capability.

The pic shown looks been shopped. Blurry battery grip and left side of the camera, while the right side is sharp. Different black level n contrast as well. Dunno, I could be wrong :p

It most probably is a photoshop image, no one knows how the camera will look and can only guess roughly what it's gonna look like...

Obviously it won't be much different to a D700 and the final release won't be much different....

I wonder how much they will cost?

Yeah, will start saving for one, it's great value for money compared to a Mamiya or Hasseblad which cost far more and only have a few more mp...

The D4 will be great, if not the best for low light performance and the D800 will be great for mp count, therefore perfect for studio shoots, landscape and blowing up large prints...

If the D800 is released costing around £2500 then I'm definately getting one. :D

are you sure this is a d800 not a replacement for d3x?

nope, the D800 is replacing the D700. It's the D4 that would be replacing the D3 series bodies.

True. The only strange thing is why they've suddenly increased the mp from 12 to 36, that's a BIG jump...

The low light/high iso performance won't be great though, maybe on par with the old D3/D700...

The new D4 will piss over the D800 in low light & in fps...

Unfortunately there is no camera that has excellent high iso performance as well as high fps and high mp count.

If there were it would cost thousands and would never sell...

If you want speed, performance and great iso performance but not bothered about high mp count then something like a D3S or the new D4 would be great.

Otherwise if your not too bothered about fps and low light but require high resolution then the D800 is just what you need...

Canon is also the same, you either go for resolution or fps/speed and iso performance.

The 1DS Mark IV is just 16mp but is fantastic for low light iso performance as well as fps...

Should you require resolution then the 5DS Mark II is what you need!

I agree that the D800 is a strange upgrade from the current D700. But if you do the math it is a logical step forward. The current D7000 is a 16mp DX crop sensor and has quite a good high ISO range. FX is 1.5 times bigger in height and width than the DX sensor. So 36mp/1.5/1.5=16mp. I know that 1.5 isn't the exact crop ratio but you get my drift.
Anyway, even if the D800 turns out to be only $2000 I still don't think I'll be upgrading. 36mp is useless to me (and most people) and will triple the file size and take up more hard drive space. I currently have 60,000+ raw images on my drive and the same backed up to another drive. Maybe 50 of those photos have been printed and only 3 were printed larger than 8x11. So I'll be sticking with the D700 for now and hope Nikon rethinks the mega pixel war and comes up with a D900 that's only 24mp but better ISO.

    Just my $0.02

based from what i read before, nikon is introducing "binning" wherein you could limit the pixel count and in return increase ISO performance. you may think of it as increasing the pixel density in exchange for decreased pixel count (which actually makes sense technically). but that was a few months ago when the D800 was first rumored, and i'm not sure if it is still true now.

but if that's true, then that would be a great tech to have as you have the flexibility to choose between low-light performance or really big picture resolution on the same body.

this is very weird. D3X was owning D700 in terms of mpix count So what you're saying is how its reversed now? D4 will be sports oriented and D800 is gonna be the high mpix cam? This is too strange to me.

The only thing I can think of, if this info is legit, is Nikon got scared of Canon's new flagship and they're trying to match it with something just as fast. So then it explains low mpx count but fast fps.

yes it appears. but i don't think they're scared or also pursuing the MP-wars with canon. what nikon mainly improved upon these new set of bodies are their video capabilities, it's where canon is really trumping them on. we all know MP count doesn't mean jack unless you're doing billboard-size prints. it's the other 'non-marketing' specs that really count.

i also did some quick pixel density calculation and the D800 came with practically the same pixel density (0.044MP/mm2 [D7000] vs 0.041MP/mm2 [D800]) as the D7000. so on paper it should at least have the same ISO performance of a D7000. in comparison, D700 came out with a pixel density of 0.014MP/mm2. so that kinda puts into perspective the kind of low-light sensitivity the D700 has.

PS: i still can't find the vid about the D800 pixel binning. i swear it's one of dom bower's vids in YT, but i can't find it.
