Can anyone recommend a good video converter/ripper to get DVD's into a decent format for a smartphone?

Id like some not too huge files (under a gig if possible) but decent picture quality (not fussed about HD). The player I use is MX player (android) so it should handle most file types but its just getting the movie file into a manageable size and still watchable.

    Thanks

Try "Any Video Converter". It has a free version. I've been using it for my smartphone and iPad mini and I'm happy with it.

Aimersoft's offering is excellent, but it's not free if you wish to avoid seeing 'watermarks' on your screen.
