Hi everyone.

Hi everyone.
My Dad wants to buy a new projector and pointed me to this one for only £650 from Costco.
http://www.optoma.co.uk/projectordet...ment&PC=HD131X
I'm going to get one myself, its that good.

Its the Optoma HD131X 1080p 3D Projector.
It looks to be identical in specs to the Optoma HD25 except Optoma only give a 1yr warranty with the HD131X and a 2yr with the HD25, the 131X is cheaper.
Although if you get it from Costco, they give a 5 year warranty on projectors anyway.
The HD25 is white and comes with a set of RF 3D glasses, the HD131X is black and doesnt come with any glasses.
Reviews of the HD25
http://www.avforums.com/reviews/Opto...93/Review.html
http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/proje...28/optoma-hd25
Only review I can find of the 131X, pretty short.
http://www.reviewsone.co.uk/optoma-h...80p-projector/

Its a pretty bright single chip DLP (2000 ANSI Lumens) so should be great to run in ECO mode if you dont run a HUGE screen.
ECO mode has a rated 6,000 hr lamp life, full power mode is 3,500 hrs.
Replacement bulbs are listed for $399 and £330 but given the life span thats not too bad.

It uses 240W in ECO, 300W full power.
If I use it for 8 hours a day in ECO mode, it will cost me approximately £8 more a month (£100 a year more) to run on electric than my 40W 27" LCD monitor, and the bulb will last 2 years ish.

3D on a large screen is much more immersive than a small screen.
3D for films is full frame rate for each eye (24 or 30fps) at 1080p res per eye, perfect for Blu Ray 3D.
3D for gaming is 60fps per eye at half 1080p res or 30fps per eye at full 1080p res.
Not the very best, but then again, look at the price and features!
I'm running an LG 3D TV at half res and its still very impressive.

There are 3 types of glasses you can use with this projector, Radio (RF), Infrared (IR) and DLP-LINK which take cues from the image.
The official glasses are called ZF2100 and use radio to communicate, they are reported to be the best.
They arent cheap though, the cheapest are from Scan.co.uk.
Glasses with transmitter are £78 (only needs one transmitter), just the glasses are £68.

DLP-Link uses a very fast colour frame on the screen to tell the glasses to change eye, no emitter needed.
The 144Hz version of the glasses is needed for this projector and are £24 from amazon, not bad!
The downside is that black may not look as dark due to the extra colour frame flash, but I dont know if this even matters.
They can also be affected by reflections in bright walled rooms, so its worth buying one set of glasses to test first if you have a bright room.

I havent researched Infra red glasses much, they are reported to work ok though with the usual desynching issues.

Its major downside is placement.
It can be placed 1.2 to 10m from the screen depending on the required image size and has a 1.2x manual zoom lense.
For a 120" (3m) diagonal image, it needs to be around 2.5 to 3m away from the screen on the ceiling or a table at approx the height of the bottom or top of the image.
There is a digital keystone correction but its best not to use this as you lose pixels and it may not look so smooth.

Opinons please.
Anyone who has experience of this projector, please post :)

I started to play Dead Space 3 again yesterday and while playing it for about 45 minutes my mouse cursor popped up in mid game and I couldn't access DS3's menu. Not even to exit the game. Now my PC didn't lockup, I could still alt-tab out of the game but as soon as I tried, I was brought instantly back into Dead Space 3. So I tried to Ctrl-Alt-Del to kill the DS3 executable and when I tried to access the task manager it would again take me back to Dead Space 3. I then hit alt-f4, although still stuck in the DS3 menu, I heard a confirmation to quit the game, hit enter and was able to kill DS3. Now this isn't really the weird part since I've had games (although rarely) that are a little reluctant to be terminated (Oblivion and Fallout did something similar).

The weird thing that caused DS3 to go all funky was Origin popped a window to download and install Crysis 2... without my permission! I didn't even try to install it though Origin. I thought it was strange at the time, but disregarded it. Then it happened again today! Same whole process where I couldn't access DS3 menu and had to alt-f4 out. This time Origin wasn't trying to install Crysis 2, but iTunes was asking me to install Quicktime to watch a movie... I didn't even open iTunes when I turned on my computer this morning!! Why was iTunes trying to watch a video? And it wasn't the "Apple has Updates" window that pops open sometimes when you need an update.

What the hell is going on? I might be a little paranoid. But this is only happening when Origin is running. I usually keep it off since I only use it to play EA games (which isn't often). I find this disturbing because Origin is acting like a damned spyware opening **** it shouldn't and making it a hassle for me to stop it from doing so (being stuck in a game). Has anyone else had anything weird like this happen to them when Origin's running?

P.S. Part of the reason for my concern is that Origin was considered a spyware by many when it was first released to consumers. Here's an example.

So I've got bored with my current rig and it's time to upgrade but unsure what path to take.

I have sold my mobo as I was never impressed with it but still have my 2500k, my next decision was either keep the 2500k and get a new mobo or sell it and get either Ivy or Haswell with a new mobo.

Options:
1. Keep 2500k and get a new mobo
2. Get Ivy and new mobo
3. Get Haswell and new mobo

I will be getting a Corsair 900D with 2x 480 Rads.

Cash isn't an issue but ofc I like to justify the amount spent. I love to overclock too and not sure if Haswell will bring the fun / tweaking the Sandy did.

Hi Guru's

Well I'm not feeling melancholy or maybe I am but I have rather a significant birthday tomorrow, or do I?

Do any you fine folks place any emphasis or special significance on a birthday or anniversary just by reason of its supposed significance?

For birthdays I'm thinking 18, 21, 30, 40......

What about wedding anniversaries, silver, gold diamond....

Do these dates actually mean anything? We have so many other significant dates that should surely mean so much more shouldn't they?

Oh I'm not thinking of having a midlife crisis but I would welcome all your views.

Personally, I wasn't interested in celebrating tomorrow but my wife and boy appear to really enjoy talking about it and planning things so I suppose for me its as much about them enjoying themselves as me getting anything from it.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow but don't like the number, it just seems so midway! Maybe the best years of my life are still ahead but could I be closer to death than birth when I turn 40?

Rambling now....time for you lot. :D
